(CNN)

Audrie Pott Suicide: Top 10 Facts You Need to Know
posted1 day agoby Heavy Staff
In another tragic incident of teen suicide prompted by sexual assault and Internet bullying,
three 16-year-old boys in California have been arrested in connection with the heartbreaking
story of 15-year-old Audrie Taylor Pott.
Pott took her own life September 10, 2012, about a week after she was allegedly victimized while passed out drunk at a party.
At least one photo of the incident went viral, and Pott fell into despair. "The whole school knows...My life is ruined,"
she wrote on Facebook days before the suicide.
Yesterday, the three boys behind her alleged assault were finally arrested on suspicion of sexual battery.
Here's what you need to know. Stay tuned for updates.
1. The Boys "Did Unimaginable Things" to Audrie
About 10 teens gathered for a party last September at the Saratoga, California, house of a friend whose parents were out of town.
They got drunk on booze mixed with Gatorade. An unconscious Audrey was allegedly assaulted by three boys who "did unimaginable
things to her while she was unconscious," Pott family lawyer Robert Allard told NBC Bay Area.
“What these boys did is beyond unconscionable. They should be held to the highest standard of the law to make sure this never ever happens again.”
2. Disgusting Photos Went Viral
Photos of the alleged assault, picturing Audrie naked and unconscious, were rapidly shared via text, email and finally Facebook.
3. Pott Was Bullied ? and Devastated
Pott, a popular student, was harassed and cyberbullied by peers who saw and commented on the photos. Humiliated,
she fell into despair. "The whole school knows...My life is ruined," she posted on Facebook days before her death.
4. She Committed Suicide; the Community Was Shocked
About a week after the party, Audrie hanged herself.
In a memorial article on her school's website, she was described by peers as a "beautiful girl" who made everyone laugh;
a creative artist and soccer player since age 2; and dedicated volunteer at a local horse ranch. Friend Amanda Le said:
I’ll always remember how much laughter she brought to everybody. There was never a dull moment with her.
She saw the very best in people and genuinely loved people unconditionally.
Spanish teacher Gina Rodriguez said:
She was such a beautiful girl. I think of her every day when I look at her desk. I wish she could have seen so many of us in
teal in her honor. She had no idea how loved she was in this community.
On the Friday after her death, September 14, all the students at Saratoga High wore teal, Audrie's favorite color:
5. The Attackers Were Her Friends
According to the family lawyer, the boys who victimized Audrie were boys with whom she was well acquainted.
They are described as her "friends."
6. The Suspects Were Arrested at School
Yesterday, two boys were arrested at Saratoga High School, where Audrie was a student. The third, a former Saratoga student,
attends Christopher High School in the town of Gilroy. The boys, whose names have not been released, will reportedly face
charges of sexual battery. The boys are held in a juvenile detention facility awaiting hearings next week.
They could also face charges of disseminating child pornography.
Santa Clara County sheriff's spokesman Deputy Kurtis Stenderup told Gilroy Patch:
Our detectives are still actively writing search warrants. I'm told this is far from being over.
Today, on the Facebook page for the Audrie Pott Foundation, Audrie's parents and the family lawyer made a plea to any
students who have information on the case. The message says they fear the three accused boys have destroyed evidence.
The parents, who didn't know about the assault until after their daughter was dead, are demanding that the boys be tried as adults.
7. The Case is Chillingly Similar to a Recent Canada Tragedy
Audrie's story is reminiscent of the Rehtaeh Parsons Case in Canada. Parsons also hanged herself, after an alleged rape by four boys,
the viral spread of nude photos, and Internet bullying.
9. It's Also Reminiscent of the Steubenville Rape Case
In perhaps the highest-profile case involving the gang rape of an inebriated girl followed by the spread of compromising photos and
online bullying, two 16-year-olds were convicted last month in the infamous Steubenville Rape Case.
10. Her Parents Are Championing a Cyberbullying Law
According to the family lawyer, Audrie's parents are pushing for a law to be named in Audrie's honor. They don't want her
death to be in vain, and they have encouraged news outlets to use her name to raise awareness. Meanwhile,
the parents are looking to sue about 10 people in connection with Audrie's death.

Lawyer: Girl saw details online of sex assault
By MARTHA MENDOZA | Associated Press ? Sat, Apr 13, 2013
SARATOGA, Calif. (AP) ? Fifteen-year-old Audrie Pott passed out drunk at a friend's house, woke up and concluded she had been sexually abused.
In the days that followed, she was shocked to see an explicit photo of herself circulating among her classmates along with emails and text messages about the episode. And she was horrified to discover that her attackers were three of her friends, her family's lawyer says.
Eight days after the party, she hanged herself.
"She pieced together with emails and texts who had done this to her. They were her friends. Her friends!" said family attorney Robert Allard. "That was the worst"
On Thursday, sheriff's officials arrested three 16-year-old boys on suspicion of sexual battery against Audrie, who committed suicide in September. Lawyers for the three, whose names have not been released because they are minors, released a statement Friday asking the public to withhold judgment until their clients can give their side of the story, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
"Much of what has been reported over the last several days is inaccurate. Most disturbing is the attempt to link (Audrie's) suicide to the specific actions of these three boys," the statement from San Jose attorneys Eric Geffon, Alan Lagod and Benjamin Williams reads. "We are hopeful that everyone understands that these boys, none of whom have ever been in trouble with the law, are to be regarded as innocent."
The arrests and the details that came spilling out shocked many in this prosperous Silicon Valley suburb of 30,000. And together with two other episodes recently in the news ? a suicide in Canada and a rape in Steubenville, Ohio ? the case underscored the seeming callousness with which some young people use technology.
"The problem with digital technologies is they can expand the harm that people suffer greatly," said Nancy Willard, an Oregon-based cyberbullying expert and creator of a prevention program for schools.
Allard said Audrie had been drinking at a sleepover at a friend's house, passed out and "woke up to the worst nightmare imaginable." She knew she had been assaulted, he said.
She soon found an abundance of material online about that night, including a picture.
"We are talking about a systematic distributing of a photo involving an intimate body part of hers," Allard said. He said distributing the photo was "equally insidious as the assault."
She also discovered that her attackers were three boys she considered friends ? young men in whom she had confided, the lawyer said.
On Facebook, Audrie said the whole school knew what happened, and she complained that her life was ruined ? "worst day ever," Allard said.
Her parents did not learn about the assault until after her death, when Audrie's friends approached them, Allard said.
Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith told the Mercury News that investigators for her department started looking into the circumstances surrounding Audrie's Sept. 10 suicide in the days immediately following it. A deputy assigned to Saratoga High heard rumors about the sexual assault and possible photographic evidence, and detectives spent months interviewing students and subpoenaing cell phone records, Smith said.
"We still have more interviews to do. We have more phones to get," the sheriff said. "We have good evidence to justify the criminal charges even though the investigation is ongoing."
Family members also believe the attackers tried to destroy evidence. That claim was posted on a Facebook page for a foundation set up in the girl's name.
It didn't provide further details on what type of evidence might have been targeted by the suspects. However, it asked any students with information to come forward.
In Canada, meanwhile, police said Friday they have received new information and are reopening their investigation in the case of 17-year-old suicide victim Rehtaeh Parsons.
Parsons was photographed while being sexually assaulted in 2011 and was then bullied after the photo was shared on the Web, authorities said. Police initially concluded there were no grounds to charge anyone.
In Steubenville, Ohio, two high school football players were convicted last month of raping a drunken 16-year-old girl in a crime that was recorded on cellphones by students and gossiped about online. The victim herself realized she had been attacked after seeing text messages, a photo of herself naked and a video that mocked her.
The suspects in the Saratoga case were booked into juvenile hall, where they still were being held on Friday.
The news surprised residents of the town.
"People in this town are involved, parents advocate for their kids to get the best education, the best teachers, the best sports," said Jamie Perez, who was walking her baby and her dog on Friday past a coffee shop.
Perez graduated from the local school system, which has one of the top high schools in the state.
Family videos of Audrie show a bright, cheerful girl standing on a cantering horse, boogie boarding at the beach, playing her violin and singing.
Interviewed for her high school newspaper Saratoga Falcon when she started as a freshman in 2011, Audrie was optimistic and said she was looking forward to playing on the soccer team.
"I'm really excited to meet new people; there are a lot more people in high school than in middle school," she said. "However, I'm not looking forward to all the extra homework. Another thing I'm really excited about is that in high school, the dances seem so much more fun."
Allard, who hired two former San Jose police officers to investigate what happened, said Thursday's arrests "reopened a wound" for the girl's family members, and they have gone into seclusion. But they want to see the boys prosecuted as adults and action taken again those who passed the photo around. Her mother, father and step-mother have scheduled a Monday news conference where they plan to discuss how they found out about the attack.
"If anybody was involved in the ruthless forwarding of this information involving an intimate body part of her, we want to make sure they're held accountable," he said.

Audrie Pott Suicide: Three teens arrested for alleged sexual assault of Calif. girl who committed suicide
(CBS/AP) SAN JOSE, Calif. - Authorities arrested three 16-year-old boys Thursday on charges that they sexually assaulted
a 15-year-old who killed herself eight days after the attack. A family attorney said Audrie Pott was humiliated by online
photos of the assault and posted on Facebook that her life was ruined, "worst day ever," and hanged herself.
"The family has been trying to understand why their loving daughter would have taken her life at such a young age and to
make sure that those responsible would be held accountable," said family attorney Robert Allard.
"After an extensive investigation that we have conducted on behalf of the family, there is no doubt in our minds that the victim,
then only 15 years old, was savagely assaulted by her fellow high school students while she lay on a bed completely unconscious," said Allen.
Allard said students used cell phones to share photos of the attack, and that the images went viral. The news of the boys' arrest
comes just days after another teen, Canadian Rehtaeh Parsons, committed suicide following what her mother says was bullying after
four teen boys allegedly raped her and posted photos of the attack online.
Police arrested the boys on charges of sexual battery, seven months after the girl's suicide. The names of the suspects were not
released because they are minors.
The Associated Press does not, as a rule, identify victims of sexual assault. But in this case, Pott's family wanted her name and
case known, Allard said. The family also provided a photo to the AP.
Audrie's family requested privacy until a planned news conference Tuesday. Her father and step-mother Lawrence and Lisa Pott,
along with her mother Sheila Pott, have started the Audrie Pott Foundation to provide music and art scholarships and offer youth counseling and support.
The foundation website alludes to the teen's struggles, but until now neither law enforcement, school officials nor Audrie's
family have discussed the sexual battery.
"She was compassionate about life, her friends, her family, and would never do anything to harm anyone," the site said. "She was
in the process of developing the ability to cope with the cruelty of this world but had not quite figured it all out.
"Ultimately, she had not yet acquired the antibiotics to deal with the challenges present for teens in today's society."
On the day Pott died, Saratoga High School principal Paul Robinson announced her death, stunning classmates. Two days later other
students and staff wore teal, her favorite color, in her honor.
Santa Clara County Sheriff's Lt. Jose Cardoza said two of the teen suspects were arrested at Saratoga High School and the third,
a former Saratoga High student, at Christopher High School in Gilroy on Thursday.
Cardoza said the suspects were booked into juvenile hall and face two felonies and one misdemeanor each, all related to sexual
battery that allegedly occurred at a Saratoga house party.
The lieutenant said the arrests were the result of information gathered by his agency's Saratoga High School resource officers.
He said the investigation is ongoing, and Los Gatos police also continue looking into the girl's September 2012 suicide.
